    Press release: WindSider, the next-generation wind energy development platform
    24/03/2020 – In January 2020, 3E launched the development of a next-generation AI-powered wind data platform aiming to improve wind resource assessment. This new platform addresses the need for automated, low-cost and accurate wind resource data for planning bankable wind energy projects.
    Kick-off meeting of the project
    The WindSider consortium is led by a team of industry leaders and research pioneers in the wind power and ICT sectors. Here are some representatives of the consortium during the kick-off meeting on 16 January 2020 in Brussels, ready to take up the challenge!

Coordinator

3E

As project coordinator and platform owner, 3E will combine the expertise of the consortium in AI, cloud-computing technologies and Copernicus SENTINEL 2 satellite data into a new cutting-edge platform tailored to the needs of the wind industry. 3E will also apply its expertise in wind resource modelling to deliver the next generation data modelling technology for shaping future standards in wind resource assessment.

3E is an independent data and technology company, delivering solutions for performance optimisation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Bridging the gap between R&D and the market, 3E combines in-house innovation, partnerships with leading R&D centres, and a thorough understanding of practical industry needs to continuously offer high performance, cost-effective energy services and products.

DTU

DTU Wind Energy has undertaken basic research, teaching and commercial activities in all aspects of wind energy since the mid-1970’s. DTU Wind Energy has 240 staff members and is the world’s largest public research institute for wind energy and is internationally recognized as a globally leading department. In WindSider, DTU is aiming to develop a robust validation framework that is generic enough so it can be applied to various wind modelling workflows. The framework will be used to validate the WindSider model chains and can provide objective metrics on the model performance.

Nazka Mapps

Nazka mapps is a Belgian SME specialized in interactive maps and location-based services based on GIS and Remote Sensing analytics. Since its foundation in 2012, nazka provides customized map web applications for a growing number of international customers in the domain of Mobility, Health and Climate. With the development of innovative wind application interfaces for the Global Wind Atlas and the New European Wind Atlas, nazka also became a preferred UI partner in the wind energy community. In WindSider, nazka mapps is responsible for the development of the User Interface and the Land Cover component based on the Copernicus Sentinel satellites.

Singular Logic

SingularLogic is a leading Software Vendor and one of the largest Integrated IT Solutions Group in Greece. Its activities include the development and distribution of business software products, cloud and mobile applications, the study, design and implementation of integrated IT solutions and services for both the private and the public sector, outsourcing services. In WindSider, SingularLogic is responsible for the development of a cloud orchestrator for the efficient execution of the automated model chains.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is one of the top research universities in Spain in all engineering fields. UPM has a large experience in international projects and technology transfer to the industry. UPM participates on the project through the Distributed Systems Lab (LSD). The research activity of the LSD is on scalable and dependable distributed systems. Current work focuses on cloud computing, scalable complex event processing, scalable databases, and big data. The role of UPM in the project is around an optimization engine that anticipates the availability and price of different spot instances over time.
